Portugal has always intrigued me—despite having a similar population of around 11 million, it is so different from Belgium. It’s larger (92,000 km² vs. 30,000 km²), shaped by a rich maritime history, while Belgium played a key role in European industry and politics. Economically, Belgium has a higher GDP per capita, but Portugal thrives on tourism and exports.
Until recently, my experience with Portugal was limited to a distant memory of Lisbon and a road trip to the south over 25 years ago. The only things left from that trip are a few faded family pictures. In January 2025, I finally returned, spending nearly a week wandering Lisbon’s historic streets and capturing its unique blend of old and new. From the vibrant azulejo-covered facades to the dramatic interplay of light and shadow, Lisbon proved to be a photographer’s dream. This is just a glimpse—hopefully, I’ll get to explore more of Portugal soon. For now, you can find a selection of my Lisbon photos below.
