Al Jalali Fort: A Historical Landmark in Muscat

Al Jalali Fort is located near Al Alam Palace in Muscat. Formerly associated with Sultan Qaboos, the palace retained its official name, Al Alam Palace, after his passing in 2020. Built by the Portuguese in the late 16th century during their occupation of Oman, the fort stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Gulf of Oman. Originally part of the city's coastal defense system, it has a long history of military use and later served as a prison. Today, the fort is maintained by the Omani government and is used for state events – Muscat, Oman
