Nizwa, Oman, is a historic city located about 140 km southwest of Muscat. Once a center of trade, education, and religion, it was the capital of Oman during the early years of Islam. Nizwa is known for its traditional souk, famous for silver jewelry, pottery, and fresh produce, as well as its historic fort.
Nizwa Fort, built in the mid-17th century by Imam Sultan Bin Saif Al Yarubi, is one of Oman’s most visited landmarks. Its massive round tower was designed to defend against attacks, and its strategic location offered control over trade routes. The fort features hidden traps, narrow staircases, and wells for storing water, showcasing its defensive design.
