Exploring the Terraced Villages of Jebel Akhdar

The terraced agriculture of Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain) in Oman is a centuries-old practice where local communities grow crops on mountain slopes using the traditional falaj irrigation system, which channels water from springs to the fields. The main crops include pomegranates, apricots, walnuts, and roses. The roses, in particular, are used to produce Omani rose water, a renowned local product. During our stay at the Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort, I captured some photos of the valley at sunset and explored the villages of Alar, Alain, and Al Shuraijah. Alar is famous for its rose plantations, especially during the blooming season in spring. Alain showcases fruit orchards and walnut trees, reflecting the area's agricultural heritage. Al Shuraijah, the largest of the three, combines fruit trees, rose gardens, and terraces with remarkable views.
