Galápagos Giant Tortoises

Upon landing on San Cristóbal Island, we were transferred by bus to the harbor, where a dinghy took us to our yacht, the Grand Majestic—our home for the next eight days. After settling in, we disembarked again for our first excursion: visiting the David Rodríguez Breeding Center.

This center is crucial in conserving Galápagos giant tortoises, helping to hatch, raise, and release them into the wild. It was interesting to see tortoises at different stages of life and learn about the challenges they face, from habitat loss to invasive species.

These slow-moving, long-lived reptiles are among the most iconic species of the Galápagos, capable of living well over 100 years. Adult Galápagos giant tortoises can reach up to 1.8 meters long and weigh over 250 kg. Each island has its unique tortoise species adapted to its specific environment. While some have domed shells, others have saddleback shells, allowing them to stretch their necks to reach food.

Although the number of tortoises we saw was limited, I still managed to get some half-decent shots of these incredible creatures!
