Inverewe Gardens: A Botanical Oasis in the Scottish Highlands

After yesterday’s intermezzo with some images taken in Ghent with my Leica M8, we’re continuing our exploration of Wester Ross. Our journey took us through Shieldaig and Charleston to Inverewe Gardens near the village of Poolewe. Despite its northern location, the garden thrives with a variety of plants from around the world, thanks to the warm currents of the nearby Gulf Stream. This creates a surprisingly mild microclimate for Scotland, allowing exotic plants from as far away as New Zealand and Chile to flourish. The garden was established in the 19th century by Osgood Mackenzie, who transformed what was originally barren land by planting trees and shrubs. Over time, these plantings turned the landscape into a lush, green space.
