Approaching Central Asia from above

Less than two hours before I landed in Urgench, Uzbekistan, I captured this black and white aerial view of snow-dusted peaks below—likely the Kopet Dag or Gissar mountain range. My flight from Istanbul had already crossed the Caucasus and the vast Caspian Sea, carrying me into Central Asia's ancient Silk Road regions.

I had recently visited Sebastião Salgado's Amazônia exhibition, which inspired me to see these landscapes through a new lens, blending raw natural beauty with storytelling in monochrome. This inspiration feels especially poignant now: Salgado has just passed away, and the world has lost one of photography's great voices.
