Mud, Water, and Silence – Crossing the Wadden Sea

This photo is part of a series taken during a guided mudflat walk (wadlopen) from Lauwersoog to the remote island of Rottumeroog in the Wadden Sea.

The route led us through knee-deep mud, across wide tidal channels where the water reached our waists, and over stretches of firm sand that felt almost like a beach walk.

What struck me most weren't the difficult parts or the views, but the quieter moments in between. Like this one: a single person, surrounded by endless space, moving forward at their own pace. There's physical effort, yes, but also calm. Not lonely — just connected. Just someone in nature, small against the landscape, yet very present in it.
