Mudflat Journey through the Wadden Sea

This photo was taken just before I started a mudflat walk (wadlopen) from Lauwersoog to Rottumeroog — a unique and unforgettable experience. The walk across the seabed is about 13 kilometers, and after reaching the island, it takes around 4 hours by boat to return to Lauwersoog.

The Wadden Sea is a shallow coastal area along the shores of the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. It stretches over 500 kilometers and contains sandbanks, mudflats, and salt marshes. In Dutch, it's called "de Waddenzee" and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its unique landscape and rich biodiversity.

Rottumeroog is a small, uninhabited island near the German border. It is part of a protected nature reserve and not open to the public without special permission. The island is wild and quiet, shaped by wind, sand, and sea. It serves as a resting place for migrating birds and is a strong example of how nature constantly reshapes the Wadden landscape.
