Postcard greetings from Kihnu: the Lighthouse is A Beacon on the Southern Shore

While staying in Pärnu, we took the opportunity to visit Kihnu, just a one-hour ferry ride from the mainland. Upon arrival, our guide, Mare—if I'm spelling that right—was waiting for us with bicycles. Exploring the island by bike was easy since Kihnu is a small island; the longest route is only 7 km, and the widest part is 3 km. The island is known for its rich cultural heritage and unique traditions that have been preserved over centuries. Around 300 people live on the island permanently, and many of the women still wear traditional clothing daily. Additionally, about 300 Estonians have second homes there. The culture on Kihnu is deeply rooted in fishing and farming, with customs passed down through generations. Kihnu is often called a living cultural museum, and in 2003, UNESCO recognized its cultural space and traditions as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. During our visit, we saw landmarks like the church, the lighthouse, and the local museum, learning about the island's history and traditions.
