11 May 2020 Update from A Locked Down Ghent

Yesterday’s figures contained some encouraging news with the number of COVID-19 patients on intensive care wards having fallen below 500 for the first time since 24 March. Nevertheless, 75 people were reported to have died from COVID-19.
This brings the total number of fatalities in Belgium to 8,656. Also, a further 83 COVID-19 patients have been admitted to hospital. The worst appears to be behind us, however, I view the relaxation of the lockdown measures with trepidation. I do of course understand why the measures are being relaxed. Everyone needs human contact and wants to bring a little bit of normality back into their lives. Most people now know how the virus is passed on and how they can prevent this, still with the re-opening of non-essential shops and the relaxation of the social contact I’m a little bit afraid and hope that people will be careful.
