6 December 2020: Update on The Corona Pandemic – While all coronavirus indicators continue to drop, Belgium has now carried out over six million tests since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. An average of 2,178 new people tested positive per day over the past week, which is a 17% decrease. Over the past two weeks, 293 infections were confirmed per 100,000 inhabitants, which is a 54% drop compared to the two weeks before. Over the last week an average of 187 patients were admitted to hospital. Finally, the reproduction rate stands at 0.803. For many Belgian towns and cities yesterday was the first big test for safety in corona times since the reopening of non-essential shops. To monitor and control crowds Ghent introduced an online barometer to keep a measure of the crowds in the city center. The barometer employs data from car parks and mobile phone operators, albeit anonymously. Shoppers quizzed about the situation said that they are happy with the corona measures adopted in the city to keep shopping in the metropolis safe for all. On display today is another cityscape from downtown Ghent – Ghent, Belgium.
