While staying at Hrifunes Guesthouse in Skaftártunga, a nightly ritual involved checking Northern Lights websites after dinner. Witnessing the Aurora Borealis demands the alignment of several factors. Fortunately, our high-latitude location near the Arctic Circle was ideal, the season was right, and light pollution minimal. Now, we eagerly anticipated clear skies and heightened solar activity, known to enhance the chances of a vivid display. However, nothing is guaranteed, and countless photographers have faced cold, starry nights in vain. Our luck smiled upon us early in our stay at Hrifunes Guesthouse when websites indicated a reasonable chance of a sighting. Understanding that the Northern Lights thrive with an interesting foreground, we revisited the charming church we had spotted earlier. Before midnight, I captured this shot. I hope you find it as captivating as I do… Suðurland Grafarkirkja, Highlands Region, Iceland
