The Chain Bridge connecting Pest and Buda is one of the symbolic buildings of Budapest and the most widely known of the Hungarian capital. During my very short stay on the Pest side I must have walked over it half a dozen times at all times of day and every time it provided a new stunning view of the Danube and both sides of the city. According to a Hungarian legend the architect had been so embarrassed that he committed suicide. At the time of its construction the Chain Bridge was considered to be one of the wonders of the world. Chief engineer Adam Clark was supposedly so proud of his masterpiece that he challenged people to find a flaw in it. When it was pointed out that the guardian lions had no tongues, he was so ashamed that he jumped off the bridge, becoming the first person to kill themselves there – Budapest, Hungary.
