Taquile is a small island on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca. For the roughly 2,000 residents, spinning yarn and weaving intricate patterns thousands of years old are as important to everyday life as farming and cooking. When Taquileños began encouraging visitors in the 1970's, after centuries of relative isolation, they created a model for community-based cultural tourism.
