Urban Solitude: The Lone Lifeguard's Watch - Barcelona, Spain

You may wonder why I've chosen to include this photograph, taken in September 2017, in my series 'Urban Solitude.' It captures a solitary lifeguard overseeing the usually bustling Barceloneta in the vibrant metropolis of Barcelona. Despite being a popular spot for locals and tourists of all ages, the scene shows the lifeguard sitting alone, gazing out at the Mediterranean Sea under a cloudy sky, with no one in the water. It always intrigued me why he remained stationed there, especially considering the lousy weather that kept swimmers away.
